Our History

 

Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya was founded by the Widya Mandala Foundation through the Decree Number 001/Ja/Sek/60 on January 4, 1960 and ratified through notarial deed of Anwar Mahajudin  no. 42/1960.

The history of current Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya did not start in the city of Surabaya itself. We have to go to another city within the same province of East Java, which is the city of Madiun. The Faculty of Education in Madiun started its first activities on September 20, 1960, then was ratified by the Decree No. 318/Sek/Ya/72, dated July 15, 1972 and retroactive since September 20, 1960. In that same year of 1960, the Faculty of Teachers Training and Education with Language Education and Indonesian Literature Study Programs was established and ratified through Decree No. 319/Sek/Ya/72.

The date September 20, 1960 was then determined by (the late) Mgr. John Hadiwikarta, Pr. as the date of birth of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya Surabaya through the Bishop Letter No. 131/G113/III/98, dated March 6, 1998.

On September 1, 1961, the Widya Mandala Foundation established the Faculty of Teacher Training in Natural Sciences, located at St. Louis High School in Surabaya, which was passed in the Decree No. 316/Sek/Ya/72. On September 1, 1962, the Department of English Language and Literature was established and legalized by the Decree No. 317/Sek/Ya/72. Both majors were then transferred to the former seminary building on Dinoyo Street no. 42, Surabaya. Through the Ministry of Education Decree No. 159 of 1965 dated August 7, 1965, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Widya Mandala was converted into Widya Mandala Teachers Training and Education Institute. However, through the Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 164 in the year of 1969, Teachers Training and Education Institute of Widya Mandala was transformed to be the Faculty of Teachers Training and integrated back into Widya Mandala Catholic University. Through the Decree from the Minister of Education and Culture No. 014/O/1983, the name was changed again to the Faculty of Teachers Training and Education. Its Department of Language and Arts (English Program Study) was moved to the Kalijudan campus, while the Department of Natural Sciences (Physics Program Study) was to remain its location in the Dinoyo campus. In 1996-1997, the two program studies were united and their location settled in the Kalijudan campus.

On September 1, 1964, the Faculty of Pharmacy was established and approved through the Decree No. 319/Sek/Ya/72. It occupied the east wing of Dinoyo campus building. Since the year 1990-1991, the Faculty of Pharmacy had also additionally opened the Pharmacist Professional Education Program established through Widya Mandala Foundation Surabaya through Decree No. 018/I/YWM/1990, dated May 29, 1990.

On September 1, 1965, the Faculty of Economics (with Economics Program Study) was established through the Decree No. 40/Rek/Univ/1968, dated September 11, 1968. In September 1, 1974, the Institute of Adjunct Accountant Education was established based on the Widya Mandala Foundation Letter No. 045/Sek/Ya/1974, dated September 11, 1974. In May 1982, the name was changed to the Institute of Accounting Education. By decree of the Foundation in 1985, the institution changed its name again to be the Accounting Study Program for Undergraduate program at the Faculty of Economics, and it stays this way until now. In addition, the Accounting Department also developed the Accounting Diploma Program. Starting from the academic year of 1983-1984, the Economics Study Program was changed to be the Management Study Program through the Dean's Decree 263/WM.05/Q/1983 dated July 1, 1983. During the academic year of 2004-2005, Department of Management opened a Diploma program in Retail Management.

On April 8, 1969, the Institute of Secretarial Education was established by the Widya Mandala Foundation No. 331A/Sek/Ya/72, dated September 4, 1972. This institution was then developed into a Non-Degree Faculty of Social Sciences with Secretarial Study Program through the Widya Mandala Foundation Decree No. 029/I/Ya/Div/86 dated April w9, 1986, and received its registered status through the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0307 / O / 1987 on June 8, 1987. Through the Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 19/Dikti/Kep/1999 dated February 4, 1999, Non-Degree Faculty of Social Science with its Secretarial Study Program was then transformed into the Academy of Secretary Widya Mandala Surabaya.

In 1973, the Institute of Vocational Education with Electronics Study Program was established. On June 8, 1982, the Faculty of Engineering with Electrical Engineering Study Program was established through the Widya Mandala Foundation Decree No. 022/Ya/1982. The Institute of Vocational Education with Electronics Study Program was then integrated into the Faculty of Engineering in 1982. Then the Chemical Engineering Study Program was opened later in 1986. Lastly, in 1996 the Faculty of Engineering opened its third Study Program, which was the Industrial Engineering Study Program.

The Faculty of Agriculture with the Food Technology and Nutrition Study Program was established by the Widya Mandala Foundation by the Decree No. 028/I/Yay/Div/1986, dated 19 April 1986. The establishment was based on the goal of contributing to the education in agricultural sector -- a field that is commonly reflecting the life of most Indonesians in general. The Food Technology and Nutrition Study Program was established to meet the challenges of producing food experts who are able to handle the processing of agricultural products into raw or finished materials in the era of industrialization (development of the agro-industrial sector).

In academic year 1997-1998, the Faculty of Psychology was established using the Widya Mandala Foundation Decree No. 226/YWM/H/1997, dated December 2, 1997. This faculty received its registered status through the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 162/Dikti/Kep/1998 on June 5, 1998.

In 1999, the Graduate School of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya was established with its Master of Management (MM) Study Program through the Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 196/Dikti/Kep/1999, dated April 30, 1999 and English Education Master Program (MPBI) Study Program on November 7, 2000 through the Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 385/Dikti/Kep/2000. The Doctoral Program in Management was established on January 20, 2009 with operating license No. 68/D/T/2009.

On July 1, 2005, the Faculty of Nursing was established through the Widya Mandala Foundation Decree No. 052-A/YWM/SK/VII/2005 and received its establishment permits from the Director General of Higher Education through Decree No. 3365/D/T/2006, dated September 4, 2006. The Faculty of Nursing was established to prepare and produce quality human resources and health professionals along with the development of science and technology.

On January 8, 2009, the Faculty of Philosophy was established through the Widya Mandala Foundation Decree No. 003/YWMS/SK/I/2010 and obtained its construction permit from the Directorate General of Higher Education through the Decree No. 2334/D/T/2009 on December 7, 2009. Faculty of Philosophy was established with two basic objectives. The first one is there is a need for human resources that are capable of critical and rational thinking, clear concepts, having a deep knowledge of and sensitivity to humanity, strategy-building, and carrying out all wisely in daily practice. Second, philosophy is needed to create the human resources that have a thoroughand profound knowledge about human life. Graduates of Faculty of Philosophy are expected to be able to create a critical academic climate, both internal in college environment and outside of campus in a wider community. Faculty of Philosophy hopes to be able to produce a next generation that is professional and critical in thinking, strategic decision makers, and workers who are professionals in various fields of life.

The last two Faculties established in Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya are the Faculty of Communication Science in 2010 and the Faculty of Physician Education in 2011. The Faculty of Communication Science's operating license was issued by the Minister of National Education through the Decree No. 122/D/O/2010, dated August 16, 2010. The Physician Education was issued its operating licenses from the Education Ministry through the Decree No. 49/E/O/2011, dated March 23, 2011.
